Utah Governor Proposes Sales Tax Rate Cut and Broader Tax Base

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has proposed:

– slashing the state sales tax rate from 4.85% to 1.75%; and

– broadening the sales tax base, including taxing services.

The proposal came in the governor’s 2019 State of the State Address. The governor called for a $225 million tax cut, agreeing with a proposal by House Speaker Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville. It would be the largest tax cut in Utah’s history.
