Massachusetts Expected to Enact Sales Tax Holiday Last Minute

The Massachusetts legislature has passed, and Governor Charlie Baker is expected to sign, a bill enacting a last minute sales tax holiday for this upcoming weekend, August 11-12, 2018.

What Does the Sales Tax Holiday Include?

The sales tax holiday would apply to nonbusiness retail sales of property with a price of up to $2,500 per item. Additionally, the tax holiday would not apply to sales of:

– telecommunications;

– tobacco products;

– marijuana products;

– alcoholic beverages;

– gas;

– steam;

– electricity;

– motor vehicles; or

– motorboats.

Do Vendors Still Need to Report the Uncollected Tax?

Reporting requirements for vendors, including return filing requirements, would remain in effect for transactions on the days covered by the sales tax holiday.

H.B. 4732 as passed by the Legislature, effective when signed by the Governor
