Oregon Stays Connected to Federal Extenders

Oregon did not disconnect from the federal extenders in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. Oregon taxpayers may claim:

  • the Oregon tuition and fees subtraction; and
  • the itemized deduction for mortgage insurance premiums.

In addition, they may exclude discharged debt on their principal residence from their taxable income.

Amending for Oregon Tuition and Fees Subtraction

Taxpayers who want to claim the tuition and fees subtraction can file an amended return.

The Department of Revenue has identified all of the returns claiming the tuition and fees subtraction that it adjusted in processing before updating their system. Oregon is reviewing those returns, even without a written objection, and will reverse the adjustment if the taxpayer qualifies for the subtraction.
