CA Taxpayers Must Complete Use Tax Line on Returns

California Gov. Edmund G. Brown, Jr. has signed legislation that provides individual income tax returns and instructions to require that:

  1. taxpayers enter a number on the use tax line of personal income tax returns; and
  2. taxpayers who enter a zero on the use tax line check one of two boxes to validate that they either remitted use tax or that they don’t owe use tax.

The legislation applies to returns filed for tax years starting as of January 1, 2017.
