IRS Issues Reminder Regarding Highway Use Tax Return Due Date (IR-2017-129)

Truckers and other owners of heavy highway vehicles are reminded that the next federal highway use tax return is due on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017. The deadline applies to Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, and the accompanying tax payment for the tax year that began on July 1, 2017, and ends June 30, 2018. Returns should be filed and tax payments made by Aug. 31 for vehicles used on the road during July. For vehicles first used after July, the deadline is the last day of the month following the month of first use.

All taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of the speed and convenience of filing the form and making the payment electronically. Taxpayers reporting 25 or more taxed vehicles have to e-file, however, tax-suspended vehicles are not counted for this threshold. Taxpayers could visit for a list of IRS-approved e-file providers.
