Montana ~ Sales and Use, Miscellaneous Taxes: Governor Proposes Constitutional Ban on Statewide Sales Tax

CCH Tax Day Report

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock is proposing a constitutional amendment to prohibit a statewide sales tax, subject to voter approval. Under legislation introduced in the Legislature, the constitution would be amended to end the possibility that future legislators and governors could impose a general sales tax. If passed, the measure would be submitted for voter approval in 2018. Currently, the state constitution limits a statewide general sales tax to 4%.
